Pros and cons of Red Apple app for iPhone and iPad

Red Apple app good for

A short story with lush illustrations. The story is very good (and reminds me of one of my favorite childhood stories: The Bremen Town Musicians). What really sets this story apart is the iPod/iPhone specific details. You can choose to read or be read to, and choose English or Turkish. Oh, and the illustrations are gorgeous. Definately worth buying.
Very nice and simple. Good for the kids that learn multi languages.
Ok app, lots of potential in the platform. I thought it was supposed to be interactive but wasnt other than pages turning (unless I missed something). Also, the problem with ebooks for kids is you cant "gift them" to your child because as soon as you need your iPhone back, you are "taking away" their new book. Makes a good traveling companion, better than ADHD games and apps.
The illustrations are nice and the story is perfect for young kids. The alternate languages are fun to listen to, and would be good for bilingual children. My only complaint is that the English voice is a bit drone-ish. More languages would be interesting.

Some bad moments

I spend a lot of time looking for charming little picture book apps and have gathered a nice little collection of them. I was initially excited when I saw Red Apple in the App store. It seemed expensive as far as apps go, but I thought I would give it a try in hopes it held some magical qualities. I hate to say I ended up very disappointed with this purchase. While the story is somewhat charming, it lacks substance. I know we are talking about a childrens book here, but I collect them as a hobby and have come to realize that the really good ones have a simple yet somehow deeper message, one that can hold up to repeated visits. Unfortunately I feel that is not the case with this app. I felt a rather short changed after the story ended after just one minute and 30 seconds. The illustrations are nice, and the snow effect is good but for me the positives end there. The major selling point of this apps seems to be the inclusion of 10 languages. While that might be a nice feature for some, its not important enough for me to pay a premium price. The narration in english seemed dry and uninspired, but then again the story didnt give her much to work with. All in all I cannot recommend this app. Save your money.
